Illegal alien in the US

HOW AN ILLEGAL ALIEN IN THE US CAN OBTAIN A CANADIAN WORK PERMIT

The current situation in the United States regarding undocumented workers has made the federal government tighten immigration policies. Some states have become stricter with issuing ID documents. Many undocumented Mexican workers are left in limbo. Do they leave their job to go to a state that has more lax restrictions? Do they stay where they are? Or, do they give up their dream of a better life and return to Mexico?

These three options appear to be the only ones available. But there is a fourth option that is rarely considered by the Mexican community in the United States. It is possible for these undocumented workers to obtain a legal Canadian work permit so that they can work legally in Canada and eventually obtain Canadian citizenship.

How can this be done? The first step is probably the toughest one. To get a work permit, it is necessary to have a confirmed job offer from a Canadian employer in Canada. To have a job offer, one must get in touch with various employers across Canada. One can contact employers directly or through job placing agencies. Also, on the website www.canadacv.com, it is possible to post a video resume online. Employers will be able to see the video and take a decision as to whether or not to contact you. This part of the task will require perseverance. It can be difficult to find a job so one must keep trying. Once an employer has offered a job, it is possible to proceed to the following steps. These steps can be divided into what the employer must do and to what the employee must do.

After an employer has offered a job placement, he must apply for a Labour Market Opinion (LMO). This process can take from 8 weeks to 6 months depending on the nature of work and the province where the employment will take place. Once the LMO is approved, the employer’s work is finished and it is up to the employee to continue the process.

The next step is to file an application for a work permit. There are forms to be filled out and documents that must be obtained apply for a work permit. This process does not take very long. The following is very important: Mexican nationals are only able to apply for a work permit at a Canadian consulate in Mexico; an application cannot be filed in the United States. All applications for a work permit must be made in a country where they have legal status. Therefore, any application done inside the United States will be refused because it will not be possible to present legal status.

The Embassy may require that the applicant attend an interview. Once the work permit is issued, all that is left is to jump on a plane to Canada and begin a new life in a new country.

An important question any undocumented worker would ask is why leave the US and move to Canada? The first answer is that in Canada, they would be under legal status and would not have the fear of being deported. Secondly, any person entering Canada under a work permit is permitted to bring their families. Therefore, no undocumented worker would have to leave his or her families in the US or in Mexico to come to Canada. Also, with the Canadian dollar on par with the US dollar, there would be no real loss of income if the salary were the same. Lastly, after a few years of work experience in Canada, it would be possible to gain permanent residence and, eventually, Canadian citizenship.

The opportunities that are found in the United States can also be found in Canada. Keep this in mind: whereas the United States has a population of 300 million Canada has only 33 million. Canada needs foreign workers to be able to maintain its economy. Because of this, working in Canada should be considered.
